How much control does a candidate have over their campaign contributions?

Let's say Obama decided to drop out of the race. Does he control his "war chest" to the point of redirecting it to future Senatorial bids or future runs for the Presidency? Or does he have to forward it to the DNC? Or give it back to the contributors? (I'm pretty sure he can't spend it on wives, diamonds and Cadillacs.)
